.

The average rate is the total distance divided by the total time.

Total time is 24%2F16 + 20%2F12 = %283%2A24%29%2F48 + %284%2A20%29%2F48 = %2872%2B80%29%2F48 = 152%2F48 = 19%2F6 hours.

The average rate = %2824%2B20%29%2F%28%2819%2F6%29%29 = 44%2F%28%2819%2F6%29%29 = %2844%2A6%29%2F19 = 264%2F19 = 1317%2F19 miles per hour.
