Question 1150359: Please can you help me with this rate-time-distance word problem using the chart: A bus traveled 387 km in 5 h. One hour of the trip was in city traffic. The bus's city speed was just half of its speed on open highway. The rest of the trip was on open highway. Find the bus's city speed.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let's start with our known values.
We know that the total time traveled is 5 h and 1 h of that time was in the city.
So T%5Bc%5D is 1h and T%5Bh%5D is 4h .
Since Highway speed is double the speed of the city we can call it 2s where s is the speed in the city.
Using basic physics knowledge that Distance = Speed*Time and that total distance traveled is 387 km
We can write our equation as +T%5Bc%5D%2As+%2B+T%5Bh%5D%2A2s+=+387+>> s+%2B+8s+=+387
Solving for s gives 9s = 387>> s = 43km/h
