Question 1148765: A purse contains 50 coins of 25-paise and 50-paise denominations.if the total value of the money in the purse is ₹15,find the number of each type of coins. Answer by ikleyn(52804) (Show Source):
x for 25-paise coins and y for 50-paise coins.
x + y = 50 (1) (counting coins)
25x + 50y = 1500 (2) (counting money in paises)
In equation (2), cancel the common factor 25 on both sides. Keep equation (1) as is. You will get modified EQUIVALENT system
x + y = 50 (1')
x + 2y = 60 (2')
Now subtract equation (1') from equation (2'). You will get
y = 10.
ANSWER. 10 of 50-paise coins and the rest, 50-10 = 40 of 25-paise coins.
CHECK. 100*50 + 40*25 = ₹15. ! Precisely correct !
