Question 1148284: Two friends Ronald and Micheal live 200 miles apart. They plan to drive towards each other and meet somewhere between their houses. Ronald starts driving at 12:00 pm and drives 44 mph towards Micheal. Micheal wants to finish his favorite daytime show before he gets on the road. He doesn't start driving until 1:00 pm. He drives 60mph to try to make up for lost time. What time do the two friends meet? Found 2 solutions by Theo, MathTherapy:Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! the distance between them is 200 miles.
ronald starts at 12:00 pm and drives 44 miles per hour.
michael starts at 1:00 pm and drives 60 miles per hour.
r * t = d
r = rate
t = time
d = distance
for ronald, the formula becomes 44 * t = 200 - x
for michael, the formula becomes 60 * (t - 1) = x
simplify michael's equation to get 60 * t - 60 = x
place all variables on the left and all constants on the right to get:
44 * t + x = 200
60 * t - x = 60
those two equations need to be solved simultaneously.
add the equations together to get:
104 * t = 260
the x cancels out in the addition.
divide both sides of the equation by 104 to get:
t = 260 / 104 = 2.5
ronald traveled for 260 / 104 = 2.5 hours at 44 miles per hour for a distance of 110 miles.
michael traveled for one hour less = 1.5 hours at 60 miles per hour for a distance of 90 miles.
ronald traveled for 2.5 hours starting at 12:00 pm = 2:30 pm
michael traveled for 1.5 hours starting 1:00 pm = 2:30 pm.

Let time taken by Michael to meet, be T
Then time Ronald takes = T + 1
We then get the following DISTANCE equation: 60T + 44(T + 1) = 200
60T + 44T + 44 = 200
104T = 156
T, or time taken by Michael to meet =
