What is the equation of the line passing through the points (2,-1) and (5,-10) in slope-intercept form?

Step 1, find the slope m
Step 2, use y-y1 = m*(x-x1) where (x1,y1) is either point.

|5 -10   1|

First use the slope formula: 

m=%28y%5B2%5D-y%5B1%5D%29%2F%28x%5B2%5D-x%5B1%5D%29 with

(x1, y1) = (2, -1), and (x2, y2) = (5, -10)

to find the slope m.

Then use the formula

y-y%5B1%5D=m%28x-x%5B1%5D%29

Only substitute numbers for m and for (x1, y1).
Do not substitute any numbers for x or y, but leave them as the letters
x and y.  Then simplify and solve for y.
