mix A is 12% target material and mix B is 4% target material. we want to make a 40 ounce mix that is 9% target material. how much of each A and B mix is needed?
-----------------------------------------
v, amount of the 12% material
M, amount of finished mixture
M=40
T=9
H=12
L=4
There are many ways to solve "mixture" problems like this, including using the ugly formula that the other tutor showed.
But here is what is surely the fastest and easiest way....
(1) The 9% target percentage is 5/8 of the way from 4% to 12%, the percentages of the two ingredients.
(2) That means 5/8 of the mixture is the higher percentage ingredient.
ANSWER: 5/8 of 40 ounces, or 25 ounces, of the 12% sodium snack mix A; the other 15 ounces of snack mix B.
