Ignoring the nonsensical statement of the problem, the ratio of speeds going and returning is 5:20, or 1:4.

Since the distances are the same, the ratio of times at the two speeds is 4:1.

Since the total time was 10 hours, that means 8 hours going and 2 hours returning.

The distance he went each direction is 8*5 = 40km, or 2*20 = 40km.
