Question 1145179: The Royal Fruit Company produces two types of fruit drinks. The first type is 55% pure fruit juice, and the second type is 80% pure fruit juice. The company is attempting to produce a fruit drink that contains 65% pure fruit juice. How many pints of each of the two existing types of drink must be used to make 150 pints of a mixture that is the 65% pure fruit juice?

For a completely different method for solving "mixture" problems like this, try this:
(1) Imagine starting with 55% juice and adding 80% juice and stopping when the mixture is 65% juice.
(2) Look at the 3 percentages 55, 65, and 80 on a number line.
(3) Observe/calculate that 65 is 2/5 of the way from 55 to 80.
(4) Since 65 is 2/5 of the way from 55 to 80, 2/5 of the mixture needs to be the 80% juice that you are adding.
ANSWER: 2/5 of the 150 pints, or 60 pints, is the 80% juice; the other 3/5, or 90 pints, is the 55% juice.
