Question 1144711: While traveling to his grandmother's for Christmas. George fell asleep a fifth of the way through the journey. When he awoke he still had to travel a third of the distance that he had traveled while sleeping. for what part of the entire journey had he been asleep?
I think of it as a whole trip as 1
is d=1/5=1/3
d+d/5=1/3
6/5=1/3
5/6*1/3 ?
I am not coming up with the right answer i don't believe it is either 5/18 or 3/20 neither break down to a 1/5 or 1/3 for example. im lost and confused any help would be appreciated. Thanks Tammy

You can put this solution on YOUR website! While traveling to his grandmother's for christmas. George fell asleep a fifth of the way through the journey. When he awoke he still had to travel a third of the distance that he had traveled while sleeping. for what part of the entire journey had he been asleep?
-----------------
It's stated that he slept for 1/5 of the trip. ???

Sometimes problems are given with not enough info to solve them.
In some other instances, a lot of superfluous info is given.
This is a case of superfluous info.

It could be added that the vehicle they travelled in was purple.
It's irrelevant.

Answer is 1/5, as stated.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! .
.
Do you have doubts about it ?
Then re-read the condition and the question one more time. Or several times . . .
All other words in the problem are introduced to confuse you and to check if you are an attentive reader.
It was a joke problem, and you failed the test.

My addition after reading the post by @richwmiller.
You try to find there something, what (or which) is not there.
I still think that my interpretation is correct.
Another possibility, which I could really miss, is that the entire problem
(as it is worded, printed, posted and presented) makes no sense.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! I suspect Alan and Ikleyn misread the problem.
The first sentence about going to gramma's house is the extra info
There are three parts to the trip.
distance traveled before he slept =1/5
distance when he sleeping =s
distance traveled after he slept =1/3 s
1=1/5+s+s/3
1=1/5+4s/3
4/5=4s/3
12/15=20s/15
12=20s
6/10=s
3/5 =s
George slept 3/5 of the trip
check
1=1/5 +3/5 +(3/5)/3
1=1/5+3/5+1/5
1=5/5
1=1
check
