A non-algebraic solution, using logical reasoning and an understanding of what it means for a function to be linear....

(1) 3 is one-fifth of the way from 4 to -1 (look at the three numbers on a number line...)

(2) Therefore -- since the function is linear -- h(3) is one-fifth of the way from h(4) to h(-1).

From h(4) to h(-1) is a change of 20, from -10 to +10.
One-fifth of 20 is 4; the change from h(4) to h(3) is 4.

ANSWER: h(3) = h(4)+4 = -10 +4 = -6
