Prince Christopher and Princess Dagney were 63 miles apart at dawn.
Prince Christopher began the journey to the meeting place at 7 a.m. at 3 mph.
Three hours later Princess Dagney set out to meet him.
If they met at 4 p.m., how fast did the princess travel? :
:
if the met a 4 PM, 6 hr = travel time of the princess and 9 hrs = travel time of the prince
let s = the speed of the princess
:
Write a distance equation; dist = speed * time
6s + 3(9) = 63
6s = 63 - 27
6s = 36
s = 36/6
s = 6 mph is the speed of the princess

The algebraic solution from the other tutor is fine, and it is a good example of how basic algebra can be used to solve problems like this.

If an algebraic solution is not required, logical analysis can solve the problem easily. And the logical reasoning is good exercise for your brain....

The prince traveled for 9 hours at 3mph; the distance he traveled was 9*3 = 27 miles.

The total distance to be traveled was 63 miles; so the distance the princess traveled was 63-27 = 36 miles.

Since the princess started 3 hours after the prince, she traveled for 6 hours.

Since she traveled 36 miles in 6 hours, her speed was 36/6 = 6mph.
