The back of the book lists the answer as -4/9(t÷2) ,but when I try to work out the problem, I get a huge jumbled mess.

IDK what you mean, it's not clear.
Using all CAPS is not helpful at ALL.
I might be able to figure it out, but that's not my job, it's yours.

Look at the response from tutor @MathTherapy.

Your "+" sign in the original problem is apparently supposed to be a "÷" sign; and the "÷" sign in the book answer you show is apparently supposed to be a "+" sign.

The two signs are easily confused if the printing is not clear.

Work the problem that way and you will get the book's answer.

The work you showed in your other post of this problem shows that you know what you are doing; so I think you will be able to see that the corrected expression simplifies to the corrected answer.
