Question 1143079: a. Use these numbers to find the total cost of tuition and fees at public colleges for a four year period from the school year ending in 2007 through the school year ending in 2010: For 2007, $5836; for 2008. $ 6,185; for 2009, $6585; for 2010, $7020.

b. The model an (a sub-n) = 395n + 5419 describes the cost of tuition and fees at public colleges in academic year n, where n = 1 corresponds to the school year ending in 2007, n = 2 to the school year ending in 2008, and so on.
1) Use this model and the formula for Sn to find the total cost of tuition and fees at public colleges for a four-year period from the school year ending in 2007 through the school year ending in 2010.
2) How does this compare with the actual sum you obtained in part (a)?
Please, HELP! I do not even know how to approach this problem. Also, besides the answer, Could you please explain how to arrive to all the answers? I mean, part a, and part b1 and b2. Thanks a million!

Did you really put any thought into solving this problem? What is it about the instructions you don't understand?

a. find the total cost for the years from 2007 through 2010.
You are given the cost for each of those years; how do you find a total of those four numbers?

b1. This tells you that a model for the cost for each year is 395n+5419, where n is 1 for 2007, 2 for 2008, and so on. So plug n=1, 2, 3, and 4 into that formula to find the cost for each year according to the model. Then add those numbers to get a total according to the model.

b2. Compare the answers from a and b1.
