You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.

            You can solve the problem using equation/equations.

Let x is Joe's walking rate in miles per hour, now unknown.

Then you have this "distance" equation

    4*2.5 + 4x = 16  miles,

saying that the total distance is the sum of partial distances.

     10   + 4x = 16,

     4x        = 16 - 10

     4x        = 6

      x        = 6%2F4 = 1.5 miles per hour.

ANSWER. Joe4's walking rate is 1.5 miles per hour.

            You also can solve the problem mentally, without using equation/equations.

In 4 hours, Jill walked  4*2.5 = 10 miles.

Hence, Joe's part was only  16 - 10 = 6 miles.

So, Joe walked 6 miles in 4 hours.

It means that Joe's rate is 6%2F4 = 1.5 miles per hour.

You get the same answer.
