A certain aircraft can fly 798 miles with the wind in 3 hours and travel the same distance against the wind in 7 hours.
What is the speed of the wind?
:
let w = the speed of the wind
let s = the speed of the aircraft in still air
then
3(s+w) = 798, with the wind
and
7(s-w) = 798, against the wind
simplify both equations, divide the 1st eq by 3, the 2nd eq by 7
s + w = 266
s - w = 114
-----------------Subtraction eliminates s, find w
0 + 2w = 152
w = 152/2
w = 76 mph is he speed of the wind
