Then from the condition (edited by me) you have this "distance" equation


    40*1 + x*1 = 70   miles.


Here "1" represents 1 hour.


From the equation,


    40 + x = 70,

    x = 70 - 40

    x = 30.

The statement of the problem is deficient.

"different directions" does not mean opposite directions.

The problem as posed can't be answered.
