You can put this solution on YOUR website!
im began a 240-mile bicycle trip to build up stamina for a triathlete competition.
 Unfortunately, his bicycle chain broke, so he finished the trip walking.
The whole trip took 8 hours.
If Jim walks at a rate of 4 miles per hour and rides at 36 miles per hour, find the amount of time he spent on the bicycle.
:
let t = his time riding on the bike
then
(8-t) = time walking
:
Write a distance equation, dist = speed * time
36t + 4(8-t) = 240
36t + 32 - 4t = 240
36t - 4t = 240 - 32
32t = 208
t = 208/32
t = 6.5 hrs on the bike
:
:
Check this, find actual dist for each (he walked 8-6.5 = 1.5 hrs)
6.5 * 36 = 234 mi
1.5 * 4 = 6 mi
------------------
total dist: 240 mi
