Question 1141507: seven people are to be seated at the head table celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary. At the head table the guests sit along one side of the table. How many seating arrangements are possible if the married couple must sit together
Answer by VFBundy(438) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The married couple can sit in 6 different positions, as follows:
OOXXXXX
XOOXXXX
XXOOXXX
XXXOOXX
XXXXOOX
XXXXXOO
Also, in each of the above 6 positions, the husband and wife can swap places. So, in total, the married couple can sit at the table in 12 different ways.
With the remaining 5 guests/positions at the table, they can sit in 5*4*3*2*1...or 120...different ways.
The total ways the married couple can sit (12) multiplied by the total ways the other guests can sit (120) equals 1440.
So, a grand total of 1440 seating arrangements are possible.
