Question 1141424: If you travel 5 mi west and then 12 mi south, how far are you from your starting point?

I’m assuming the answer to this question would be a negative number since you’re moving to the left and then down.

use Pythagoras theorem to find the distance from origin to point (5,-12)
in right triangle, the lengths of legs are 5 and 12 units, so hypotenuse d (the distance from origin to point) will be:
d=sqrt%285%5E2%2B12%5E2%29
d=sqrt%2825%2B144%29
d=sqrt%28169%29
d=13
=> you are 13 miles from your starting point
