(1) Find the total number of faces on all the small cubes.

After the big cube is cut up, the number of small cubes is 8*8*8. Each of those small cubes has 6 faces.

(2) Find the number of faces on the small cubes that ARE painted.

The faces of the small cubes that are painted are the faces that were on a face of the original cube. The original cube has 6 faces; each of those faces has 8*8 small cubes.

(3) The number of faces of the small cubes that are not painted is the difference between the answers from (1) and (2).
