You can put this solution on YOUR website!
When the sum of two whole numbers is multiplied by the difference of the numbers, the result is 85.
If the difference of the two numbers is not 1 what is the sum
(a+b)*(a-b) = 85
FOIL
a^2 - b^2 = 85
a^2 = b^2 + 85
a = sqrt%28b%5E2%2B85%29
first integer solution
a = 11; b=6
"What is the sum"
11 + 6 = 17

Let the larger and smaller WHOLE numbers be L and S
Then we get: (L + S)(L - S) = 85
85 has 2 SETS of factors, which are: 85 and 1, and 5 and 17
85 and 1 OBVIOUSLY can't be the larger and smaller WHOLE numbers
Therefore, L - S MUST = 5, and
