Question 114061: Ok, I have been trying to solve this problem for a while. The problem is (6x-4)^2=40. The directions say to solve, and I have foiled the quanity and tried to factor, I have tried to take the square roots, and I can't seem to figure it out.
The problem is - (6x-4)^2=40
Please help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Start with the given equation

Take the square root of both sides

Simplify the square root (note: If you need help with simplifying the square root, check out this solver)

Add 4 to both sides

Divide both sides by 6 to isolate x.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(6X-4)^2=40
36X^2-48X+16-40=0
36X^2-48X-24=0
12(3X^2-4X-2)=0
USING THE QUADRATIC EQUATION WE GET:
x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4%2Aa%2Ac+%29%29%2F%282%2Aa%29+
X=(4+-SQRT[(4^2-4*3*-2])/2*3
X=(4+-SQRT[16+24)/6
X=(4+-SQRT40)/6
X=(4+-6.32)/6
X=(4+6.32)/6
X=10.32/6
X=1.72 ANSWER
X=(4-6.32)/6
X=-2.32/6
X=-0.39 ANSWER.
