Question 1140342: What is the probability of flipping a coin and getting heads or drawing a face card from a standard deck?
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! These are independent since the result of one does not affect the result of the other.
for heads, p=0.5
for a face card, there are 12/52 or 3/13
To get OR, it is the sum of the probabilities of each (1/2+3/13 or 19/26) minus the probability of both occurring, which is double counting. The latter probability is the product of 3/13*1/2 or 3/26.
The answer is (19/26)-(3/26)=16/26 or 8/13 (0.615)
