The key is to make an organized list, so that you count each of the possibilities exactly once.
Start with the largest possible number of 3-point shots. 4 3-point shots makes the required total of 12 points. So there is exactly 1 way of scoring 12 points with 4 3-point shots.
Next try the next largest possible number of 3-point shots, 3. 3 3-point shots makes 9 points; you need 3 more. So you can have either 1 2-point shot or 0 2-point shots with 3 3-points shots.
Continue the similar logical analysis for 2, 1, and 0 3-point shots.
You should find a total of 19 ways to score the 12 points.
