This is a combinations problem, where you are choosing 5....3 at a time.

Grab a scientific calculator and locate the permutations and combinations button.
It might be labeled nPr and nCr.
You want to use nCr for combinations.

You are choosing 5....3 at a time.
So, type in 5C3

You should get 10.

The number of ways is the number of combinations of 5 items taken 3 at a time


    C%5B5%5D%5E3 = %285%2A4%29%2F%281%2A2%29 = 20%2F2 = 10.


ANSWER.  There are 10 ways to form a committee of free from the group of 5 people.
