You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A rectangular turtle pen is 6 feet long by 4 feet wide.
The pen is enlarged by increasing the length and width by an equal
amount in order to double its area.
What are the dimensions of the new pen?
:
Find double the area of the pen
2(6*4) = 48 sq/ft
let x = the amt increased to double the area
(x+6)*(x+4) = 48
FOIL
x^2 + 4x + 6x + 24 = 48
x^2 + 10x + 24 - 48 = 0
x^2 + 10x - 24 = 0
factors to:
(x-2)(x+12) = 0
the positive solution is all we want here
x = 2
the new dimensions:
(2+6) = 8
(2+4) = 6
8 ft by 6 ft is the new dimensions
