His wife makes  1%2F10  of the job per day.  It is her rate of work.


When they work together, they do  1%2F7+%2B+1%2F10 = 10%2F70+%2B+7%2F70 = 17%2F70  of the job per day.    ANSWER


The rate of work of two individuals working together is the sum of their individual rates.
