Distance between home and school is 3 miles.

-----

He went past his home by 1 mile.

(total of 4 miles - from the very start or from being at the school?)

Unlike the other tutor, I will assume the "total of 4 miles" includes the distance from his home to school.

Then a total of 4 miles means he has ridden the 3 miles to school and 1 mile back towards home from school; that puts him 2 miles from home.
