You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +a+ = the man's age now
Let +b+ = his son's age
--------------------------------------
(1) +a+-+4+=+6%2A%28+b+-+4+%29+
(2) +a+%2B+12+=+2%2A%28+b+%2B+12+%29+
------------------------------------
(1) +a+-+4+=+6b+-+24+
(1) +a+-+6b+=+-20+
(1) +-a+%2B+6b+=+20+
and
(2) +a+%2B+12+=+2b%2B+24+
(2) +a+-+2b+=+12+
----------------------------
Add (1) and (2)
(1) +-a+%2B+6b+=+20+
(2) +a+-+2b+=+12+
--------------------------
+4b+=+32+
+b+=+8+
and
(2) +a+-+2%2A8+=+12+
(2) +a+=+12+%2B+16+
(2) +a+=+28+
----------------------
The man is 28
The son is 8
-----------------------
check:
4 yrs ago, the man was 24
4 yrs ago, son was 4
+4%2A6+=+24+
OK
and
In 12 yrs, man will be 40
In 12 yrs, son will be 20
+40+=+2%2A20+
OK

Let x be the son's age 4 years ago.
Then 6x = the man's age 4 years ago.

x+16 is the age of the son 12 years from now (16 years after 4 years ago);
6x+16 is the man's age 12 years from now.

In 12 years, the man's age will be twice the son's age:

6x%2B16+=+2%28x%2B16%29
6x%2B16+=+2x%2B32
4x+=+16
x+=+4

4 years ago, the son's age was x=4 and the man's age was 6x = 24.

Now, the son's age is 8 and the man's age is 28.

12 years from now, the son's age will be 20 and the man's age will be 40.

Four years ago a man was 6times as old as his son.In twelve years time the man will be twice as old as his son.find their present ages.
Let the man's age be M, and the son's, S
Then we get: M - 4 = 6(S - 4)_____M - 4 = 6S - 24_____M = 6S - 20 ------- eq (i)
Also, M + 12 = 2(S + 12)_____M + 12 = 2S + 24_____M = 2S + 12 ------ eq (ii)
6S - 20 = 2S + 12 ------ Equating the two M values
6S - 2S = 12 + 20
4S = 32
