(1) Determine a variable to use. Since the problem gives both Ahmad's amount and Tammy's amount compared to Brian's amount, the logical choice for the variable is Brian's amount. So

let x = Brian's amount

Then use the given information to build expressions using x for Ahmad's and Tammy's amounts.

then 2x = Ahmad's amount ("Ahmad has 2 times what Brian has")
and x+8 = Tammy's amount ("Tammy has $8 more than Brian")
