Since Tom takes 3 times as long as Jim if they work alone, Jim works 3 times as fast as Tom.

So in working together, Jim does 3/4 of the work and Tom does 1/4 of it.

That means Jim does 3/4 of the work in 3 hours; 3/4 of the job in 3 hours means he needs another hour to do the other 1/4 of the job.

ANSWER: It takes Jim working alone 3+1=4 hours to weed the garden.
