Ben is 30 years old and Daniel is 2 years old.
How many years will it take until Ben is only 3 times as old as Daniel?
:
let y = no. of years for this to be true
30 + y = 3(2+y)
30 + y = 6 + 3y
30 - 6 = 3y - y
24 = 2y
y = 24/2
y = 12 years, Ben will be 3 times Daniel
:
:
Check their ages in 12 years
30 + 12 = 3(2+12)
42 = 3(14)

The difference in their ages is 30-2 = 28 years.

When Ben is 3 times as old as Daniel, the difference in their ages will be twice Daniel's age. (Daniel's age then, plus 2 times Daniel's age then, makes 3 times Daniel's age then.)

So if x is Daniel's age then, Ben's age will be 3x; the difference between their ages will be 2x.

But the difference between their ages is 28 years. So 2x = 28 --> x = 14.

Daniel's age when Ben is 3 times as old will be 14; since Daniel is now 2, that will be in 12 years.
