You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Two speedboats leave the same dock at the same time and travel in exactly opposite directions.
One boat is traveling 14mph faster than the other boat.
In half an hour the boats are 48 mi apart.
Find the rate of the faster boat ?
:
let s = speed of the faster boat
then
(s-14) = speed of the slower boat
:
Write a distance equation; dist = time * speed
.5s + .5(s-14) = 48
.5s + .5s - 7 = 48
s = 48 + 7
s = 55 mph is the speed of the faster boat

:
Check this, find the actual dist each travels
.5(55) = 27.5 mi
.5(55-14) = 20.5 mi
-------------------
total dist: 48 mi
