Question 1133284: Dwight wants to buy a camera that is on sale for 25% off. The original price of the camera is $300. What is the amount of the discount?
Define a variable, write an equation and solve algebraically.
The expected solution is a division equation
Why is a multiplication equation an incorrect solution ? 0.25 x 300 = x
Would greatly appreciate your reply.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Camera is $300
discount is x
we know that x is 25% of the original price of the camera, and 25% is 1/4
the discount is 300/4=$75
What you wrote is correct. Perhaps the teacher wants this written as a division equation; however, in math there are often multiple ways to do a problem. Multiplication and division reverse each other, so if one is used, there is a good possibility the other may be used as well. Indeed, 300/4 is the same as $300*(1/4)
