Question 1131452: Two compounds that contain Cu and Cl have the following masses:
Cpd A: 32.10 g Cu and 17.90 g Cl
Cpd B: 23.64 g Cu and 26.37 g Cl
Are the compounds the same? If not, what is the lowest whole-number mass ratio of Cu that combines with a given mass of Cl?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The first is about 1/2 mole of Cu and 1/2 mole of Cl, so it would be CuCl
The second is about 3/8 more of Cu and about 3/4 mole of Cl, so it would be CuCl2
The answer to the question is compound A is 1:1 and compound B is 1:2

No. They are definitely not the same. They each have a different ratio of copper to chlorine.

Cu, atomic mass unit 63.546
Cl, atomic mass unit 35.45
-
what is the lowest WHOLE-NUMBER mass ratio of Cu that combines with a given mass of Cl?
-
That looks for 1 mole Cu to 2 moles Cl;
or as MASSES, 63.536%2F%282%2A35.45%29, or 63.546%2F70.9, or to try to get close to whole numbers, highlight_green%289%2F10%29;
Cu:Cl, 9:10 ratio by MASS.
