You can put this solution on YOUR website! A man is 8 years older than his wife
m = w+8
or
w = m-8
and 6 times as old as his son.
m = 6s
When the son was born, the age of the wife was four-fifth of her husband.
w - s = (m-s)
get rid of the denominator, multiply by 5
5(w-s) = 4(m-s)
5w - 5s = 4m - 4s
5w = 4m - 4s + 5s
5w = 4m + s
replace w with (m-8)
5(m-8) = 4m + s
5m - 40 = 4m + s
5m - 4m = s + 40
m = s + 40
replace m with 6s
6s = s + 40
6s - s = 40
5s = 40
s = 40/5
s = 8

Check this, man is 48, wife is 40
"When the son was born, the age of the wife was four-fifth of her husband. "
40 - 8 = (48-8)
32 = (40)
