Question 1129906: I would very much appreciate assistance with the following problem as, I'm not sure how the equation is suppose to be set up in order to solve it. Thanks.
The top three sources of oil imports for the United States in the same year were Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Canada. The three top countries accounted for 45% of oil imports. The United States imported 1.8 percentage points more from Saudi Arabia than they did from Mexico, and 1.3 percentage points more from Saudi Arabia than they did from Canada. What percent of the United States oil imports were from these three countries? (Round your answers to one decimal place.)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
Let x be the percentage of the oil imported from Saudi Arabia (so, for example, x= 17, if 17% oil import comes from SA).

Then the percentage from Mexico is (x-1.8)

and the percentage from Canada is (x-1.3).

We are given that

    x + (x-1.8) + (x-1.3) = 45.

It is your basic equation.

Solve it step by step:

    3x - 3.1 = 45

    3x = 45 + 3.1 = 48.1

    x = 48.1%2F3 = 16.03 percents = 16.03% = 16 percents rounded as instructed.

Can you complete the solution from this point on your own ?

Solved.
