Divide 98 into two parts wich have the ratio 2:5. Find the smaller number.
let two parts be a and b such that a%3Cb
a%2Bb=98
b=98-a....eq.1
if a and b have the ratio 2%2F5, we have
a%2Fb=2%2F5.....substitute b from eq.1
a%2F%2898-a%29=2%2F5
5a=2%2898-a%29
5a=196-2a
5a%2B2a=196
7a=196
a=28=>the smaller number
then, we can check the ratio
b=70
28%2F70=4%2F10=2%2F5

.
The parts are, obviously, 2x and 5x, where x is their common measure.

You are given that

2x + 5x = 98,   or  7x = 98,   which implies  x = 98/7 = 14.

So, the parts are  2*14 = 28  and  5*14 = 70.

Answer. The parts are 28 and 70.
