Divide 98 into two parts wich have the ratio 2:5. Find the smaller number.
let two parts be and such that ....eq.1
if and have the ratio , we have
.....substitute from eq.1
=>the smaller number
then, we can check the ratio
The parts are, obviously, 2x and 5x, where x is their common measure.
You are given that
2x + 5x = 98, or 7x = 98, which implies x = 98/7 = 14.
So, the parts are 2*14 = 28 and 5*14 = 70.
Answer. The parts are 28 and 70.
