Question 1128736: Evaluate the exponential function for the indicated value of x.
g(x) = 1/3 (4)^(x − 4) for x = 8.
I substituted the given variable for x and my answer keeps being incorrect. My first answer was 65524/3, but then I converted it to a decimal which the answers were 21841 and 21841.3. Can someone explain my mistake in solving the equation?

Is that 1%2F3 multiplied by the exponential part? If yes then:

%281%2F3%294%5E%288-4%29

%281%2F3%294%5E4

%281%2F3%29%2A256

256%2F3=85%261%2F3

In general, we can't help you explain your mistake without seeing exactly what calculations you did.

However, in this case, I can see what you did wrong. You simply did not evaluate the given expression.

The correct evaluation would be

%281%2F3%29%284%5E%28%288-4%29%29%29+=+%281%2F3%29%284%5E4%29+=+256%2F3

You calculated

%281%2F3%29%284%5E8%29-4+=+%281%2F3%2965536-4+=+%2865536-12%29%2F3+=+65524%2F3
