Question 1126696: Hi, I answered these questions, but I'm not a 100% sure if I answered them right. I was hoping if you can check them and tell me if I'm wrong or not.
I'll be using II to write the matrices.
(QUESTION 1-3 ARE CONNECTED)
--Use this system to answer the questions: Ix y-2I + I2 5I = I6 1I
....................................................Iz w+4I I-2 4I I4 8I
1. find the value of x.
my answer:4
other choices: 6,0,-2
2.find the value of z.
my answer: -2
other choices: 0,4,6
3.Find the value of element a12 in the matrix containing variables.
my answer:0
other choices:-4,6,-2

Use this system to answer the questions: I2 2I - I4 -1I = Ix yI
...................................................I-1 6I I0 5I I-1 zI
4. find the value of y
my answer:3
other choices: 2,-3, 1
5. find the value of z

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The first statement in each pair is a meaningful matrix equation, showing the sum of two matrices being equal to a third matrix. That makes problems 1 and 4 easy to solve; your answers are correct.
The second statement in each pair has no meaning. What is it supposed to mean when you write three matrices next to each other, with no operations between the matrices, and without an equals sign? So questions 2 and 5 can't be answered.
For question 3, there is nothing in the given information about matrix A; how can we tell what element a12 is?

I will answer part I only (questions 1, 2 and 3).
I interpret your post in this way (as this matrix equation)
+ = .
Am I correct ? Do you agree ?
If so, then see my answers below.
1. find the value of x.
For x, we have an equation x + 2 = 6, which gives x = 6-2 = 4.
Your answer is correct in this case.
2. Find the value of z.
For z, we have an equation z - 2 = 4, which gives z = 4 + 2 = 6.
Your answer is NOT correct in this case.
3. Find the value of element a12 in the matrix containing variables.
Of the three matrices in this equation, the only element a12 containing variables is (y-2) of the first matrix.
