Question 112478: A merchant mixed 30 lb. of peanuts with 20 lbs of cashews. The 50 lb mixture sells for $203. A second mixture included 40lb of peanuts and 60 lbs of cashews. The 100 lb mixture sells for $484. Find the cost per pound of cashews.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=cost per pound of peanuts
And let y=cost per pound of cashews
Now we are told the following:
30x+20y=$203-----------------------eq1
and
40x+60y=$484--------------------------eq2
Divide each term in eq2 by 4
10x+15y=$121-------------------eq2a
Now multiply eq2a by 3
30x+45y=$363--------------------eq2b
subtract eq1 from eq2b:
25y=$160 divide both sides by 25
y=$6.40 -------cost per pound of cashews
substituting into eq2a, we get:
10x+15($6.40)=$121
10x+$96=$121 subtract $96 from both sides
10x=$25 divide both sides by 10
x=$2.50----------------cost per pound of peanuts
CK
30(2.50)+20(6.40)=203
75+128=203
203=203
and
40(2.50)+60(6.40)=484
100+384=484
484=484

Hope this helps--ptaylor
