Question 112369: A 35% alcohol solution is to be made by mixing 2 liters of 8% solution with pure alcohol. How much pure alcohol is required? Create a table with headings that include units, show equation, solve and include units in your answer.
You can put this solution on YOUR website! YOU DO THE TABLE
Let x=amount of pure alcohol needed
Now we know that the amount of pure alcohol needed (x) plus the amount of pure alcohol in the 8% solution (0.08*2) has to equal the amount of pure alcohol in the final solution (0.35(2+x)). So our equation to solve is:
x+0.08*2=0.35(2+x) get rid of parens and simplify
x+0.16=0.7+0.35x subtract 0.16 and also 0.35x from both sides
x+0.16-0.16-0.35x=0.7-0.16 collect like terms
0.65x=0.54 divide both sides by 0.65
x=0.83077-- liters----------------------amount of pure alcohol needed
CK
0.83077+0.16=0.7+0.35*0.83077
0.990769=0.990769
