Question 1121958: An outlier is defined as an unusual data point. The z-score method defines an outlier as a data point beyond 3 standard deviations from the mean and the box plot method uses quartiles in defining an outlier. Which of the following statements about detecting and dealing with outliers is true?
Select one:
a. The z-score method is a more accurate way to find outliers than the box-plot method using quartiles.
b. The measurement may be correct and from the same population as the rest but represents a rare or unusual event.
c. An outlier measurement will be incorrect. It has been observed, recorded, or entered into the computer incorrectly.
d. An outlier measurement must belong to a population different from that from which the rest of the sample was drawn.
Thank you very much

You can put this solution on YOUR website! The best answer is b. Outliers may be part of the same population, but they are very unlikely.
Outliers can be due to data errors, but there are many other causes.
z-scores are for normal distributions; there are many other types of distributions where z-scores would not be used.
