Question 1121786: If Dan drove 3 times as far as Rick, and Dan drove 24 more miles than Rick, how far did Rick drive?
Can someone please show me how to set up this equation?
Thank you Answer by ikleyn(52834) (Show Source):
From the condition, you have these two equations
D = 3R (1) ("Dan drove 3 times as far as Rick")
D = R + 24 (2) ("Dan drove 24 more miles than Rick")
From eq(1), substitute D = 3R into eq(2), replacing D.
You will get a single equation for the unknown R:
3R = R + 24.
