From the condition, you have these two equations


D = 3R        (1)     ("Dan drove 3 times as far as Rick")
D = R + 24    (2)     ("Dan drove 24 more miles than Rick")


From eq(1), substitute  D = 3R  into eq(2), replacing D.


You will get a single equation for the unknown R:


3R = R + 24.
