It is adding all those numbers, 200+230+50+40 to get $520

The correct answer and the correct solution is THIS :

    the total amount of money the company had to pay = the total number of interviewed people = 200 + 230 - 50 + 40 = 420 dollars.

Why ? - Because those 50 were counted twice : once among those 200 people and the second time among 230 people.
