a certain number of stamps was shared between tony and Jennifer. Tonys share was 600 stamps. If tonys share increased to 680 stamps, Jennifer s share decreased by 8 percent. Find Jennifer s share.

Time 1 - Tony has 600, Jen, X, total 600+X
Time 2 - Tony has 680, Jen, X-80, total, still 600+X
Jen's share decreased by 8%, therefore X-80= .92 X
Subtract .92X from both sides. And add 80 to both sides.
.08X=80
X = 1000 and prove by seeing an 8% drop is 80 stamps.

"If Tony's share increased to 680 stamps" means Jennifer s share decreased by 680-600 = 80 stamps.
Let J be the initial number of Jenifer's stamps.
Then the condition says that J-80 is 0.92*J. In other words, you have this equation
J - 80 = 0.92J, or
J- 0.92J = 80,
0.08J = 80 ====> J =  = 1000.
Answer. Jenifer's share was 1000 stamps.
