We then get: B � 8 = D + 8______D = B - 16 ------ eq (i)
Also, ____2(B + 14) = 5D___2B + 28 = 5D ------- eq (ii)
2B + 28 = 5(B - 16) � 2B = 28 ------ Substituting B - 16 for D in eq (ii)
2B + 28 = 5B - 80
2B - 5B = - 80 - 28

If they both have the same amount after Bob gives Dave $8, then originally Bob had $16 more than Dave. So let x be the original amount Dave had; then the original amount Bob had was x+16.

When Jane gives $14 to Bob, the amount he now has is x+30.

At that point, the ratio of the amounts Bob and Dave have is 5:2. So

The amount Dave had originally was x=$20; the amount Bob had originally was x+16 = $36.
