You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +a+ = original amount Bob had
Let +b+ = original amount Dave had
————————-
(1) +a+-+8+=+b+%2B+8+
(2) +%28+a+%2B+14+%29+%2F+b+=+5%2F2+
————————-
(2) +2%2A%28+a+%2B+14+%29+=+5b+
(2) +2a+%2B+28+=+5b+
(2) +-2a+%2B+5b+=+28+
————————————
(1) +a+-+b+=+16+
————————————-
(1) +5a+-+5b+=+80+
(2) +-2a+%2B+5b+=+28+
————————————-
+3a+=+108+
+a+=+36+
And
(1) +36+-+b+=+16+
(1) +b+=+20+
———————————-
Bob had 36 dollars at first
check:
(2) +%28+a%2B14%29%2Fb+=+5%2F2+
(2) +50%2F20+=+5%2F2+
OK
You can check (1)

Let B and D, be the original amounts Bob and Dave had, respectively
We then get: B – 8 = D + 8______D = B - 16 ------ eq (i)
Also, matrix%281%2C3%2C+%28B+%2B+14%29%2FD%2C+%22=%22%2C+5%2F2%29____2(B + 14) = 5D___2B + 28 = 5D ------- eq (ii)
2B + 28 = 5(B - 16) – 2B = 28 ------ Substituting B - 16 for D in eq (ii)
2B + 28 = 5B - 80
2B - 5B = - 80 - 28
- 3B = - 108
B, or Bob’s original amount = highlight_green%28matrix%281%2C3%2C+%28-+108%29%2F%28-+3%29%2C+%22=%22%2C+%22%2436%22%29%29

If they both have the same amount after Bob gives Dave $8, then originally Bob had $16 more than Dave. So let x be the original amount Dave had; then the original amount Bob had was x+16.

When Jane gives $14 to Bob, the amount he now has is x+30.

At that point, the ratio of the amounts Bob and Dave have is 5:2. So

%28x%2B30%29%2Fx+=+5%2F2
5x+=+2x%2B60
3x+=+60
x+=+20

The amount Dave had originally was x=$20; the amount Bob had originally was x+16 = $36.
