Question 112137: two ships leave a harbor traveling on courses that have an angle of 120 degrees between them. if they each travel 515 miles how far apart are they (to the nearest mile)? Answer by edjones(8007) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! If they both travel 515 miles we can construc an isocoles triangle with apex of 120 deg and 2 base angles of (180-120)/2=30 deg each.
The easiest way find the base is to construct a line from the apex perpendicular to the base. It bisects the apex and forms two right triangles.
hyp=515
cos(30)=adj/515
adj=515cos(30)=446
446*2=892 mi. To find the full base we multiply times 2.
