roof is 10 meters above ground level.
basement is 4 meters below ground level.

looke like total distance from the roof to the basement floor would be 10 meters plus 4 meters = 14 meters.

roof level minus basement level = total distance between them.

10 - (-4) = 10 + 4 = 14.
