Question 1120058: Kids pack a picnic basket and set out at exactly 1pm for the football game, driving at 35 mph. Half an hour after they leave, their mom notices their picnic basket, sitting in the kitchen. She grabs the basket, jumps in the car, and drives at 40 mph. When will mom catch up with the kids?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

In one-half hour going 35 miles per hour, the kids will have traveled 17.5 miles. Presuming that Mom noticing the picnic basket, picking it up, getting in the car, starting the car, and getting the car up to 40 miles per hour all took a total of zero minutes, we need to know how long it will take the 40 mile per hour car to travel 17.5 miles at the DIFFERENCE between the speeds of the two cars:

Which is the number of hours it would require Mom to catch up and is the number of hours you need to add to 1:30 PM to find the time she caught them.

Of course, this presumes that the kids didn't stop driving sometime before Mom caught up because they had already arrived at the location of the football game. You can do your own arithmetic. Extra credit: What is the minimum distance that the football stadium would need to be from home so that the kids would still be traveling at 35 miles per hour at the time Mom reached them?
